Pushing for more search of Extraterrestrial life
by Rebecca Sato and Casey Kazan
“Have we been looking in the wrong place, at the wrong time, in the wrong way?” ASU astrophysicist Paul Davies told the New Scientist. “SETI’s big mistake is that it’s relying on ET to do all the heavy lifting,” Princeton University astrophysicist Richard Gott said. According to Gott, if the aliens have the same attitude as us, “we’ll all just be sitting round listening”.
Australian astrophysicist Paul Davies said the approach currently being undertaken by SETI researchers is too narrow, assuming aliens communicate the same way we do here on Earth. “We’re making a lot of assumptions about aliens based on human 20th century western society,” he told New Scientist.

AERO – Advanced Energy Research Organisation
Advanced Energy Research Organization (AERO), LLC was founded by Steven M. Greer, M.D., in July 2007. AERO is a new research and development group which will develop and strategically protect new energy and propulsion technologies that will completely replace oil, gas, coal, and nuclear power.
It is time that humanity move on to its next level of development. This cannot happen with the internal combustion engine and fossil fuels. Time is short. Indeed time- and obscurity- are elements that must be overcome for success to occur.
Introduction
Technologically, the hurdles to achieve what is called over-unity energy generation by accessing the teeming energy in the space around us are not insurmountable. Numerous inventors have done so for decades. What has been insurmountable are the barriers created through the collusion of vast financial, industrial, oil and rogue governmental interests.
In short, the strategic barriers to the widespread adoption of these new electromagnetic energy-generating systems far exceed the technological ones. The proof of this is that, after many decades of innovation and promising inventions, none have made it through the maze of regulatory, patenting, rogue national security, financial, scientific and media barriers that confront the inventor or small company.
Categories of Suppression
Our review of now-obscure technological breakthroughs show that these inventions have been suppressed or seized by the following broad categories of actions:
- Acquisition of the technology by ‘front’ companies whose intent have been to ‘shelve’ the invention and prevent the device from coming to market.
- Denial of patents and intellectual property protection by systematic action by the US and other patent offices.
- Seizure or suppression of the technology by the illegal application of section 181 of the US Patent law or other illegal applications of national security provisions that result in the technology being classified or deemed “of significance to the national security”. Note that these applications are illegal actions taken by rogue, unsupervised individuals and entities who are working in collusion with interests to suppress these technologies.
- Abuses by other regulatory or licensing entities, including but not limited to rogue elements within the Department of Defense, CIA, NSA, Federal Trade Commission, Department of Energy and others.
- Targeting the inventor or company with financial scams, illegal financial arrangements that lead to the demise of the company, and similar traps.
- Systematic interception of funds and essential financial support needed to develop and put into mass application such a fundamental new energy source.
- A pattern of harassment, bomb-threats, theft and other shadowy actions that frighten, intimidate and demoralize those inventing, holding or developing such technologies; significant bodily harm and murder have also apparently occurred.
- Inducements through significant financial buy-outs, offers of positions of power and prestige and other benefits to the owner of such technologies to secure their cooperation in suppressing such technologies.
- Scientific establishment prejudice and rejection of the technology in light of unconventional electromagnetic effects thought to be not possible by current scientific conventional wisdom.
- Corruption of scientific entities and leaders through clandestine liaisons with rogue classified or shadowy private projects that intend to suppress such devices.
- Corruption of major media entities and key figures through clandestine liaisons with rogue classified or private shadowy projects that intend to suppress such devices.

The Mystery of H2O—Science Catches Water Doing Some Very Strange Things
Recently exotic new states of water are causing Harvard researchers to question what we really know about one of the most common and abundant substances on the planet.Harvard physicists found that specially treated diamond coatings can keep hot water in a frozen state. (http://www.news.harvard.edu/gazette/2007/09.20/09-hotice.html ) The researchers say the finding may be useful in certain medical implants, although others argue that diamonds might cause blood clots. In either case, the big news here is that diamonds can make water solid. Doctoral student Alexander Wissner-Gross and Efthimios Kaxiras, physics professor and Gordon McKay Professor of Applied Physics, found that even a very thing layer of diamond coated with sodium atoms will keep warm water in a solid state up to 108 degrees Fahrenheit.
As if that wasn’t weird enough, researchers from the University of Technology in Austria recently discovered that when exposed to a high-voltage electric field, water in two beakers will climbs out and cross empty space to join, forming a water bridge that appears to defy gravity. (http://physorg.com/news110191847.html)
The researchers noticed a pattern with the inner structures: every experiment started with a single inner structure, which then decayed into additional structures after a few minutes of operation. The group believes this decay is caused by either dust contamination or the increasing temperature of the water bridge under the electric field. As the water temperature increased from 20 degrees Celsius to more than 60 degrees Celsius—which took about 45 minutes—the bridge will finally, inexplicably collapse.
The scientists explain that the unusual effect of the floating water bridge, as well as the microstructures they observed during the interaction of water with electric fields, could be another piece to the puzzle of the structure of water. The group said that they are currently investigating how highly ordered microstructures may explain the density change in the water bridge.
It may be one of the most important and abundant chemical compounds on Earth, but the properties of plain old water is still a puzzle to scientists. Researchers are still trying to uncover the nature of water beyond the H2O scale, governed by hydrogen bonds, which is thought to be responsible for water’s many unique possibilities.

Frequencies in the Brain: A Key To Musical Medicine
Based on these principles, “musical physicians” from ancient cultures would prescribe specific melodies to heal physical and psychological ailments. This idea of Musical Medicine has re-emerged in recent times.
During this presentation, I take you on a fascinating tour of leading developments in the fields of music therapy, sound healing, and the neuroscience of music. Along the way, we will discover that links between musical frequencies and dynamic principles of brain organization are central to music’s power to heal the mind and body.
The Musical Brain framework has profound implications for how we use music in our everyday lives. For example, musical selections with an appropriate sound matrix (combination of timbre, harmony and rhythm) can be used to entrain brain states, enhance mental focus, accelerate healing or induce a relaxation response.

Cold-Fusion Graybeards Keep the Research Coming
CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts — At an MIT lecture hall on Saturday, a convocation of 50 researchers and investors gathered to discuss a phenomenon that allegedly does not exist.
How reproducible the experiments might be, however, and how the mysterious phenomenon works are still very much open to interpretation.
Demonstrating recent results of energetic radiation streaming from a running cold-fusion experiment, Lawrence Forsley of JWK Technologies in Annandale, Virginia, passed around samples of his group’s experimental apparatus — all of which could be packed into a shoebox with room to spare. The compact plastic and rubber tubing illustrate the intrinsic paradox of this field: Compared to the warehouses worth of billion-dollar gadgetry needed to run “hot fusion,” cold fusion research is cheap to fund. And yet cash is the primary limiting factor holding the research back.
The scarcity of funding — and of young blood — may testify to the discredited nature of the field, but the “greybeards” (as one presenter jokingly referred to his colleagues) keep turning up new results.
Scientists at the U.S. Navy’s Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center, or SPAWAR, in San Diego performed the work Forsley presented, which was published in June in the German journal Die Naturwissenschaften. It joins a long list of cold-fusion research papers that many scientists now reflexively write off as junk.
Even some of cold fusion’s top proponents are cautious when talking about the science.
“Should people believe in cold fusion based on the SPAWAR experiments (alone)? Probably not,” said MIT’s Peter Hagelstein, a co-sponsor of the conference, in an interview. “But … that’s not how science works. In the cold-fusion business, a very large number of experiments done by a large number of laboratories over a large number of years have contributed to a knowledge base. And (the SPAWAR) experiments potentially tell you something about what’s going on inside, if we can get a confirmation that they’re right.”
The cold-fusion story began in March 1989, when two scientists from the University of Utah reported they had integrated an isotope of hydrogen (.pdf) called “deuterium” into a palladium rod and, running electrical currents through it, produced nuclear fusion in a jar. Several leading researchers around the United States, however, failed to replicate the results and soon pronounced cold fusion debunked, kicking the entire field to the sidelines of mainstream research.

The Crop Circle Ship – Blueprints in the Crop Circles
Fungi Make Biodiesel Efficiently at Room Temperature
Scientists at the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology have found a much better way to make biodiesel. Their new method could lower the cost and increase the energy efficiency of fuel production.
Last Monday, Ravichandra Potumarthi showed off his work during a poster session at the International Conference on Bioengineering and Nanotechnology. After returning to his lab in Hyderabad, he was able to send out some pictures of his experimental reactor (shown on right) and the fungal pellets.
Typically, biodiesel is made by mixing methanol with lye and vegetable oil and then heating the brew for several hours. This bonds the methanol to the oils to produce energetic molecules called esters. Unfortunately, heating the mixture is a huge waste of energy, and a major selling point of alternative fuels is efficiency. An enzyme called lipase can link link oil to methanol without any extra heating, but the pure protein is expensive.
Potumarthi has a simple solution. Why bother purifying the lipase? It would be easier to just find an organism that produces plenty of the enzyme and squish it into pellets. In this case, the fungus Metarhizium anisopliae does the trick.
Recently, several huge research centers have sprung up to develop better ways to make biofuels. Considering that a handful of chemical engineers can accomplish so much on what appears to be a shoestring budget, the future of alternative fuels looks pretty good — but maybe a bit slimy.
Scientists hail ‘frozen smoke’ as material that will change world
A MIRACLE material for the 21st century could protect your home against bomb blasts, mop up oil spillages and even help man to fly to Mars.
Scientists are working to discover new applications for the substance, ranging from the next generation of tennis rackets to super-insulated space suits for a manned mission to Mars.
It is expected to rank alongside wonder products from previous generations such as Bakelite in the 1930s, carbon fibre in the 1980s and silicone in the 1990s. Mercouri Kanatzidis, a chemistry professor at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, said: “It is an amazing material. It has the lowest density of any product known to man, yet at the same time it can do so much. I can see aerogel being used for everything from filtering polluted water to insulating against extreme temperatures and even for jewellery.”
Aerogel is nicknamed “frozen smoke” and is made by extracting water from a silica gel, then replacing it with gas such as carbon dioxide. The result is a substance that is capable of insulating against extreme temperatures and of absorbing pollutants such as crude oil.
It was invented by an American chemist for a bet in 1931, but early versions were so brittle and costly that it was largely consigned to laboratories. It was not until a decade ago that Nasa started taking an interest in the substance and putting it to a more practical use.
In 1999 the space agency fitted its Stardust space probe with a mitt packed full of aerogel to catch the dust from a comet’s tail. It returned with a rich collection of samples last year.
In 2002 Aspen Aerogel, a company created by Nasa, produced a stronger and more flexible version of the gel. It is now being used to develop an insulated lining in space suits for the first manned mission to Mars, scheduled for 2018.
Mark Krajewski, a senior scientist at the company, believes that an 18mm layer of aerogel will be sufficient to protect astronauts from temperatures as low as -130C. “It is the greatest insulator we’ve ever seen,” he said.
Aerogel is also being tested for future bombproof housing and armour for military vehicles. In the laboratory, a metal plate coated in 6mm of aerogel was left almost unscathed by a direct dynamite blast.
It also has green credentials. Aerogel is described by scientists as the “ultimate sponge”, with millions of tiny pores on its surface making it ideal for absorbing pollutants in water.
Kanatzidis has created a new version of aerogel designed to mop up lead and mercury from water. Other versions are designed to absorb oil spills.
He is optimistic that it could be used to deal with environmental catastrophes such as the Sea Empress spillage in 1996, when 72,000 tons of crude oil were released off the coast of Milford Haven in Pembrokeshire.
Aerogel is also being used for everyday applications. Dunlop, the sports equipment company, has developed a range of squash and tennis rackets strengthened with aerogel, which are said to deliver more power.
Earlier this year Bob Stoker, 66, from Nottingham, became the first Briton to have his property insulated with aerogel. “The heating has improved significantly. I turned the thermostat down five degrees. It’s been a remarkable transformation,” he said.
Mountain climbers are also converts. Last year Anne Parmenter, a British mountaineer, climbed Everest using boots that had aerogel insoles, as well as sleeping bags padded with the material. She said at the time: “The only problem I had was that my feet were too hot, which is a great problem to have as a mountaineer.”
However, it has failed to convince the fashion world. Hugo Boss created a line of winter jackets out of the material but had to withdraw them after complaints that they were too hot.
Although aerogel is classed as a solid, 99% of the substance is made up of gas, which gives it a cloudy appearance.
Scientists say that because it has so many millions of pores and ridges, if one cubic centimetre of aerogel were unravelled it would fill an area the size of a football field.
Its nano-sized pores can not only collect pollutants like a sponge but they also act as air pockets.
Researchers believe that some versions of aerogel which are made from platinum can be used to speed up the production of hydrogen. As a result, aerogel can be used to make hydrogen-based fuels.
"Star Trek" Warp Speeds a Reality? Scientists Claim Quantum Tunneling Exceeds Speed of Light
A pair of German physicists claim to have broken the speed of light. Such an achievement would challenge our entire understanding of space and time.
However, Dr Gunter Nimtz and Dr Alfons Stahlhofen, of the University of Koblenz, say they may have breached that key tenet of the Special Relativity theory by causing light to defy it’s own speed limit.
The scientists were investigating a phenomenon called quantum tunneling, which allows sub-atomic particles to break apparently unbreakable laws, when the physicists claim they propelled photons faster than the speed of light.
Nimtz told New Scientist magazine: “For the time being, this is the only violation of special relativity that I know of.”
Other scientists—while not doubting the pair’s results—argue that it would be naive to assume the phenomenon automatically violates special relativity, depending on how one chooses to interpret the data.
In either case, the faster than light phenomenon has raised a lot of mind-bending questions about the nature of the universe. In theory such an occurrence on a wider scale could allow for all kinds of strange events, including time travel and instantaneous traveling between distant locations.
To see how far they could make photons tunnel, Nimtz and Stahlhofen coupled two glass prisms together to make a cube 40 centimeters on its sides. Since photons tunnel most readily over distances comparable with their wavelength, the physicists used microwaves with a wavelength of 33 cm – long enough for large tunneling distances yet still short enough that the prism can bend the photons’ paths.
As expected, the microwaves shone straight through the cube, and when the prisms were separated, the first prism reflected the microwaves. However, in accordance with theory, a few microwave photons also tunneled across the gap separating the two prisms, continuing as if the prisms were still sandwiched together.
Nimtz and Stahlhofen found that the reflected microwaves and the few microwaves that tunneled through to the second prism both arrived at their respective photodetectors at the same time. This suggests an ultra-fast transit between the two prisms. In fact, it was so much faster than the speed of light that the experimenters couldn’t measure it.
The pair also found that the tunneling time, if there was any, did not change as they pulled the prisms further apart. But because tunneling efficiency drops off with distance, Nimtz says that they were not able to observe the effect across distances greater a meter.
According to the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, a particle’s energy and the time it spends in any one place cannot both be known with absolute precision. This means particles can sometimes slip over a barrier if the time they spend traversing that barrier is short enough. According to the physicists, quantum tunneling is a fairly common phenomenon in the quantum world, and is part of many of the processes we take for granted.
“In my opinion, tunneling is the most important physical process, because we have it in radioactivity and we have it in nuclear fusion,” Nimtz says. “The temperature of the sun is not high enough to organize regular fusion of protons into helium [without tunneling]. Some people are saying that the big bang happened because of tunneling. Recently, many people have argued that processes in biology and in our brain are based on tunneling.”
The physicists hope that future research will reveal useful applications of these findings. If so, humankind may be in for more mind-blowing revelations about the way things work.
Or maybe tinkering with these weird principles will just blow up the universe instead: “Hey, what happens if we…” *blip*

Physicists have ‘solved’ mystery of levitation
Levitation has been elevated from being pure science fiction to science fact, according to a study reported today by physicists.
Now, in another report that sounds like it comes out of the pages of a Harry Potter book, the University of St Andrews team has created an ‘incredible levitation effects’ by engineering the force of nature which normally causes objects to stick together.
Professor Ulf Leonhardt and Dr Thomas Philbin, from the University of St Andrews in Scotland, have worked out a way of reversing this pheneomenon, known as the Casimir force, so that it repels instead of attracts.
Their discovery could ultimately lead to frictionless micro-machines with moving parts that levitate But they say that, in principle at least, the same effect could be used to levitate bigger objects too, even a person.
The Casimir force is a consequence of quantum mechanics, the theory that describes the world of atoms and subatomic particles that is not only the most successful theory of physics but also the most baffling.
The force is due to neither electrical charge or gravity, for example, but the fluctuations in all-pervasive energy fields in the intervening empty space between the objects and is one reason atoms stick together, also explaining a “dry glue” effect that enables a gecko to walk across a ceiling.
Now, using a special lens of a kind that has already been built, Prof Ulf Leonhardt and Dr Thomas Philbin report in the New Journal of Physics they can engineer the Casimir force to repel, rather than attact.
Because the Casimir force causes problems for nanotechnologists, who are trying to build electrical circuits and tiny mechanical devices on silicon chips, among other things, the team believes the feat could initially be used to stop tiny objects from sticking to each other.
Prof Leonhardt explained, “The Casimir force is the ultimate cause of friction in the nano-world, in particular in some microelectromechanical systems.
Such systems already play an important role – for example tiny mechanical devices which triggers a car airbag to inflate or those which power tiny ‘lab on chip’ devices used for drugs testing or chemical analysis.
Micro or nano machines could run smoother and with less or no friction at all if one can manipulate the force.” Though it is possible to levitate objects as big as humans, scientists are a long way off developing the technology for such feats, said Dr Philbin.
The practicalities of designing the lens to do this are daunting but not impossible and levitation “could happen over quite a distance”.
Prof Leonhardt leads one of four teams – three of them in Britain – to have put forward a theory in a peer-reviewed journal to achieve invisibility by making light waves flow around an object – just as a river flows undisturbed around a smooth rock.

Physicists Use Levitation To Solve a Sticky Problem
Scottish physicists at prestigious St Andrews University have developed a method of making tiny objects levitate by reversing a mysterious force of nature. Normally when you hear that someone is using “the force” to levitate objects, you have to wonder if they’re a confused Star Wars fan trying to be a Jedi warrior. However, these scientists say they are only using their knowledge of real physics to create an incredible solution to a real engineering problem.
“In order to reduce friction in the nanoworld, turning nature’s stickiness into repulsion could be the ultimate remedy. Instead of sticking together, parts of micromachinery would levitate,” explained Professor Leonhardt.
While it is also theoretically possible for humans to levitate, scientists are a long way off from developing the kind of technology needed for levitation on a larger scale.
“At the moment, in practice it is only going to be possible for micro-objects with the current technology, since this quantum force is small and acts only at short ranges. For now, human levitation remains the subject of cartoons, fairytales and tales of the paranormal,” cautions Leonhardt.
For smaller parts, the levitation will occur using a phenomenon called the “Casimir force”, which was predicted by quantum physicists back in 1948. It wasn’t proven to exist until scientists were finally able to measure it ten years ago. Scientists are still struggling to fully understand it.
The force is caused by a little understood quirk of nature which seemingly enables particles to “pop into existence” from out of nowhere. This creates a force that pushes together two objects placed very close to each other. It can also be demonstrated by a gecko’s ability to stick to a surface with just one toe.
Other scientists are eagerly taking notice of this fascinating research. The Scottish pair’s theory is now being examined by a leading American scientist, who plans to put the ideas into practice. Dr Frederico Capasso, of Harvard University in the United States, is currently also working on ways to manipulate the Casimir effect. Philbin said, “We’ve shown him our work and he’s very interested.”
The technique has the potential to revolutionize nanotechnology and the design of micro-machines. The scientists predict their discovery will ultimately lead to frictionless micro-machines with moving parts that levitate.
Because the Casimir force has little effect on everyday life—it is usually ignored. Nevertheless, it becomes an extremely important force when trying to develop tiny switches and micro-machines, since their components have a tendency to stick to each other.
Professor Leonhardt explains how controlling this force will revolutionize micro-engineering, “The Casimir force is the ultimate cause of friction in the nano-world, in particular in some micro-electromechanical systems. Micro or nano machines could run smoother and with less—or no friction at all—if one can manipulate the force.”

Zero Point Energy & The Dirac Equation Part II
(Source: http://www.ufodigest.com/news/0707/zeropoint6.html)
Zero Point Energy & The Dirac Equation – Part I
Zero Point Energy (ZPE) describes the random electromagnetic oscillations that are left in the vacuum after all other energy has been removed. One way to explain this is by means of the uncertainty principle of quantum physics, which implies that it is impossible to have a zero energy condition. In this article, the ZPE is explained by using a novel description of the graviton. This is based on the behavior of photons in a gravitational field, leading to a new definition of the graviton. In effect, gravitons behave as if they have charge and magnetic effects. These are referred to as negative color charge, positive color charge and magnetic color. From this, it can be shown that a photon is made of color charges and magnetic color. This definition of the structure of a photon then leads to an explanation of how the vacuum produces Zero Point Energy (ZPE).
Zero Point Energy (ZPE), or vacuum fluctuation energy, are terms used to describe the random electromagnetic oscillations that are left in a vacuum after all other energy has been removed.
The concept of zero-point energy was first proposed by Albert Einstein and Otto Stern in 1913, and was originally called “residual energy” or Nullpunktsenergie. All quantum mechanical systems have a zero point energy. The term arises commonly in reference to the ground state of the quantum harmonic oscillator and its null oscillations.
In cosmology, the vacuum energy is taken by many to be the origin of the cosmological constant. Experimentally, the zero-point energy of the vacuum leads directly to the Casimir effect , and is directly observable in nanoscale devices. One way to explain this is by means of the uncertainty principle of quantum physics, which implies that it is impossible to have a zero energy condition. In this article, an attempt has been made according to the concept of gravitational blue shift, to take the Mössbauer effect, Pound-Rebka experiments and the interaction between gravity and the photon into consideration from a Higgs field point of view. Spray-On Solar-Power Cells Are True Breakthrough
Stefan Lovgren
Scientists have invented a plastic solar cell that can turn the sun’s power into electrical energy, even on a cloudy day.
The plastic material uses nanotechnology and contains the first solar cells able to harness the sun’s invisible, infrared rays. The breakthrough has led theorists to predict that plastic solar cells could one day become five times more efficient than current solar cell technology.
Like paint, the composite can be sprayed onto other materials and used as portable electricity. A sweater coated in the material could power a cell phone or other wireless devices. A hydrogen-powered car painted with the film could potentially convert enough energy into electricity to continually recharge the car’s battery.
The researchers envision that one day “solar farms” consisting of the plastic material could be rolled across deserts to generate enough clean energy to supply the entire planet’s power needs.
“The sun that reaches the Earth’s surface delivers 10,000 times more energy than we consume,” said Ted Sargent, an electrical and computer engineering professor at the University of Toronto. Sargent is one of the inventors of the new plastic material.
“If we could cover 0.1 percent of the Earth’s surface with [very efficient] large-area solar cells,” he said, “we could in principle replace all of our energy habits with a source of power which is clean and renewable.”
Infrared Power
Plastic solar cells are not new. But existing materials are only able to harness the sun’s visible light. While half of the sun’s power lies in the visible spectrum, the other half lies in the infrared spectrum.
The new material is the first plastic composite that is able to harness the infrared portion.
“Everything that’s warm gives off some heat. Even people and animals give off heat,” Sargent said. “So there actually is some power remaining in the infrared [spectrum], even when it appears to us to be dark outside.”
The researchers combined specially designed nano particles called quantum dots with a polymer to make the plastic that can detect energy in the infrared.
With further advances, the new plastic “could allow up to 30 percent of the sun’s radiant energy to be harnessed, compared to 6 percent in today’s best plastic solar cells,” said Peter Peumans, a Stanford University electrical engineering professor, who studied the work.
Electrical Sweaters
The new material could make technology truly wireless.
“We have this expectation that we don’t have to plug into a phone jack anymore to talk on the phone, but we’re resigned to the fact that we have to plug into an electrical outlet to recharge the batteries,” Sargent said. “That’s only communications wireless, not power wireless.”
He said the plastic coating could be woven into a shirt or sweater and used to charge an item like a cell phone.
“A sweater is already absorbing all sorts of light both in the infrared and the visible,” said Sargent. “Instead of just turning that into heat, as it currently does, imagine if it were to turn that into electricity.”
Other possibilities include energy-saving plastic sheeting that could be unfurled onto a rooftop to supply heating needs, or solar cell window coating that could let in enough infrared light to power home appliances.
Cost-Effectiveness
Ultimately, a large amount of the sun’s energy could be harnessed through “solar farms” and used to power all our energy needs, the researchers predict.
“This could potentially displace other sources of electrical production that produce greenhouse gases, such as coal,” Sargent said.
In Japan, the world’s largest solar-power market, the government expects that 50 percent of residential power supply will come from solar power by 2030, up from a fraction of a percent today.
The biggest hurdle facing solar power is cost-effectiveness.
At a current cost of 25 to 50 cents per kilowatt-hour, solar power is significantly more expensive than conventional electrical power for residences. Average U.S. residential power prices are less than ten cents per kilowatt-hour, according to experts.
But that could change with the new material.
“Flexible, roller-processed solar cells have the potential to turn the sun’s power into a clean, green, convenient source of energy,” said John Wolfe, a nanotechnology venture capital investor at Lux Capital in New York City.

Out-of-body experiences remain an enigma
“I suddenly realised that I really was high up and looking down on my own body. I think at this point I was at about ceiling level and gently drifting about. Soon after I had begun talking, I saw the cord. I looked down from where I was and saw, apparently coming from where my tummy should be, a cord. It was not really any colour, but closest to a slightly shiny greyish-white and it was slowly moving… I reached out my hand but found two things. Firstly, if I wanted a hand I could have one, or as many as I liked. Secondly, it wasn’t necessary to have a hand, I could move the cord at will, and had great fun doing it too. I was quite consciously talking all this time but very fast, as I wanted to say so much and tell them every thing I was doing.” — Susan Blackmore, lecturer and writer, recounting her own out-of-body experience during her student days at Oxford, from The Archives of Scientists’ Transcendent Experiences.
Out-of-body experiences (OBEs) are brief, bizarre experiences involving a sensation of floating outside one’s body, perceiving the world from a location outside one’s physical body and by means other than the physical senses.
Around one in 10 to 20 people have an OBE at least once in their lifetime, according to a BBC report. Though many sceptics dismiss them as dreams or dream-like sequences, researchers agree that OBEs happen when the person is fully awake and conscious. Quite a few seem to happen when the person is in bed, resting or ill, or under the influence of psychedelic drugs. OBEs are also very closely related to near-death experiences (NDEs). Unlike most drug-induced hallucinations or dreams, OBEs are not unstable and fleeting; they do not dissolve rapidly into something else. They seem as real and solid as the perceived world around us. As Dr Blackmore claims, “Somehow words fail to convey how completely real it all seemed at the time.”
Recounts Devdeep Bhattacharya, a student of IIM-Kolkata who had an OBE when he was in school, “I was on my bed, lying face down, trying to sleep, when I had this weird feeling that I was afloat a few inches above my own body, tied to it by silvery cords. It must have lasted a few minutes… after which I suddenly plopped back into my own body, as if pulled down by gravity, and seemed to wake up. At that time I had no idea about out-of-body experiences… it was only a few years later when I came across other similar experiences of people on the web that I realised that the phenomenon had a name.”
Usha Ram, professor in the department of psychology, Pune varsity, says, “OBEs are still treated in the realm of parapsychology and at present, studies and research regarding these experiences don’t fit within standard theoretical models accepted by science or scientific methodologies currently practised. In spite of this, we are currently moving towards study of what is presently called paranormal, and I hope soon enough the research into that area would also be regarded as scientific.”
According to her, there are various techniques, among them yoga and reiki, through which some people have cultivated the faculty of inducing OBEs, also known as astral projection.
Agrees Nandini Gulati, psychotherapist and a student of Brian Weiss, a prominent British psychiatrist dealing in past-life regression, “OBEs are usually induced when a person is undergoing an intense emotion or stress, like pain, grief or love, even in those who are otherwise not spiritually-inclined. I don’t think science has a definitive explanation for out-of-body experiences… Moreover, if spirituality offers better insight into the cycle of life and death and offers comfort and strength, a scientific explanation is not required. I think it is a great insight into the meaning of being alive and human.”
She has herself undergone a series of OBEs and describes one experience: “I heard a buzzing sound in my ears, and had the feeling of leaving my body and floating above… At that time, I was residing in London, and I had the distinct feeling of floating above London and seeing its roofs and the people walking in the street. I had a similar buzzing sensation when I was being pulled back into my body, by a force which was almost magnetic. The experience lasted about 15 minutes.”
She also asserts being able to leave her body at will, though the duration is much shorter. “It strengthens my belief that we are more than just our corporeal selves, and consciousness can exist beyond the physical body.”

The perpetual myth of free energy – Not so much a myth anymore…
Irish company Steorn made headlines around the world when it took out a full page advert in The Economist claiming to have developed a device that produced “free energy”.Throughout early July, the company planned to display the device to the public for the first time.
Professor Sir Eric Ash, electrical engineer and former rector of Imperial College London, visited the demonstration for the BBC News website.
Marvelous things can happen in this world.
Yet we know this lack of faith in the marvelous is misplaced.
So, the fact that a device or an invention looks too marvelous to be true is not conclusive evidence that it isn’t.
I believe that it is thinking on such lines that encourages inventors – and there have been many since the 12th Century – to pursue what would be a true marvel: a perpetual motion machine.
The most recent attempt is from Mr Sean McCarthy, the Chief Executive Officer of an Irish company called Steorn.
His invention, known as the “Orbo”, is a mechanical device which uses powerful magnets on the rim of a rotor and further magnets on an outer shell.
Mr McCarthy is convinced that it is working. He took a full page advertisement in the Economist last year to say so, and to attract volunteer scientists to check the authenticity of his claims.
They are still in the process of doing so.
Constant universe
The demonstration was to run over 10 days starting on 6 July. Unfortunately, there was a technical defect, attributed by Mr McCarthy to the excessive heat produced by lights used to illuminate the device so that cameras could stream pictures of it in action across the web.
He hopes to be able to demonstrate the machine at a later date.
Mr McCarthy appreciates that if the device really works it is in contradiction of the law of conservation of energy, which he sees as a dogma of science.
There is an implied reference to religious dogmas, and it is just here that one can see the source of the misunderstanding.
Most religions feature a multiplicity of dogmas.
A person who is an adherent of that religion may not necessarily believe each and every one of the dogmas. Beliefs cannot of course be chosen a la carte – but there is a degree of flexibility which can accommodate quite significant differences.
The law of conservation of energy is not like this.
It states that the total amount of energy in an isolated system remains constant, although it may change forms, into heat or kinetic energy for example.
In short, law states that energy cannot be created or destroyed.
Denying its validity would undermine not just little bits of science – the whole edifice would be no more. All of the technology on which we built the modern world would lie in ruins.
There is no flexibility in the acceptance of the law as true – at all times, and in all circumstances.
It is the failure to appreciate the difference between this scientific law and a law of religion or of society which is why we know – without having to examine details of a particular device – that Orbo cannot work.
Sole focus
I was fortunate, however, in that Mr McCarthy kindly agreed to see me.
He is a very friendly person aged just over 40, trained originally as a mechanical engineer.
He has also worked in software engineering and on control systems for the oil industry.
He came across his invention by chance whilst developing an independent power system for CCTV cameras. The company, founded in 2000 and supported privately, is now wholly devoted to developing Orbo.
When asked about the conservation of energy Mr McCarthy says quite frankly that he does not know where the energy that provides perpetual motion comes from. He wonders whether he is somehow harnessing so-called “zero point” energy, a type of residual energy found in a system and first proposed by Einstein.
Zero point energy is the lowest possible energy a system can have and therefore cannot be removed.
He also points out that cosmologists believe in the presence of dark matter and dark energy. Might they somehow help his cause?
I believe that Mr McCarthy is truly convinced of the validity of his invention. It is, in my view, a case of prolonged self deception.
I ended our conversation by giving totally unsolicited advice: to drop Orbo and get back to software engineering.
It would not have been unreasonable had he then grabbed me by the collar and thrown me out of the window. He did none of these things and was totally genial.
Might I have convinced him? I do hope so.
(Source: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/6283374.stm)
The energy Mr McCarthy was referring to is a new type, called zero-point. It is said to be virtually unlimited. Some work made by Tesla references this type of energy.
The journalists reporting the news will have, at some point, to get up to speed with all this, and stop calling these new machines what they are NOT: Perpetual Motion Machines.
Scientists call for wider search for alien life
“The committee’s investigation makes clear that life is possible in forms different from those on Earth,” the scientists conclude in their report, “The Limits of Organic Life in Planetary Systems,” published by the National Research Council.
Other experts hailed the report as an important rethinking of the search for life. “It’s going to help us a lot to make sure we go exploring with our eyes wide open,” said Michael Meyer, lead scientist for NASA’s Mars exploration program.
Starfish, sequoias, salamanders and the rest of Earth’s residents may seem very diverse, but they are surprisingly similar on the molecular scale. All species that scientists have studied need liquid water to survive, for example. Further, they all rely on DNA to carry genetic information, and they all use that information to build proteins from the same set of building blocks, known as amino acids.
NASA has long looked to life on Earth to guide its search for life on other worlds. Planets and moons that have hints of liquid water have been ranked high on the list of potential sites for life-detection missions.
But there is good reason to suspect that other kinds of chemistry could support life as well, the authors of the new report argue. Weird life could differ from life as we know it in small or big ways.
For example, while DNA uses phosphorus in its backbone, it might be possible to build a backbone out of arsenic instead. And life might exist in liquids other than water, perhaps ammonia or methane.
The report, which is posted on the Web site of the National Academies, www.nationalacademies.org, even explores the possibility of life based on silicon, not carbon, though Meyer, who had no role in the work, thinks that astrobiologists should limit their search to carbon-based life forms.
“When we look in the universe,” he said, “the only compounds we see with more than six atoms are all carbon chemistry. So there’s a hint that looking for carbon chemistry may be a better bet. There we have some idea of what to look for.”
The report calls for NASA and the National Science Foundation both to support research into weird life. Chemists need to investigate “the chemical possibilities for what forms life might take,” said one member of the committee, Steven Benner, a distinguished fellow at the Foundation for Applied Molecular Evolution, in Gainesville, Florida.
Scientists should also search Earth for weird life, the authors maintain. “There’s much about Earth life we don’t understand,” said the panel’s chairman, John Baross of the University of Washington.
Benner said there was “good evidence that the life we know on Earth was preceded by a weird form of life.” Early Earth life may have been based on RNA, a single-stranded form of DNA. Although DNA-based life may have out-competed earlier forms on the surface of the planet, RNA life may still exist in refuges. One potential hiding place is deep below the ocean floor.
“It’s an incredibly primordial world down there,” Baross said.
“If you’re going to look for remnants of an RNA world, those are the environments you want to go to.”
To find weird life, however, scientists will have to build new kinds of detectors. “There’s no question that the surveys of life on the planet we’ve done so far would have missed it,” Benner said.
The scientists also said the possibility of weird life should prompt NASA to reorder its future missions. They singled out Saturn’s moon Titan as particularly promising.

Same goes with all the money wasted on rocket propulsion with the shuttle. God! Are we going to stop wasting all this money on old tech and start digging in the work Lockheed and SAIC and all those companies have black-shelved?
Developments in science, human consciousness hold promise of new discoveries, better world
Sometimes, these create hope and new opportunities to make the world a better place.
They can also trigger concerns, discomfort and anxiety. These can be useful feelings that motivate us or provide insight.
Sometimes new information is challenging to understand and may result in denial, ridicule and a reluctance to accept things outside of our normal awareness and knowledge.
These factors all seem to be very natural. This is simply “human nature.”
Learning about what is happening in our world and being open-minded about the possibilities while at the same time “keeping our feet on the ground” and remaining “down-to-Earth” is sometimes a challenge.
GATHERING INTELLIGENCE
The serious problems that humans are dealing with globally are well known to us: war, hunger, poverty, disease, suffering, greed, corruption, injustice. These are painful and troubling realities.
Some of the developments and discoveries we are now finding out about might help resolve these challenges. In fact, many of these trends are clearly already underway.
Below are just a few of many examples:
- The U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is funding research in biology and medicine to understand how certain creatures regrow severed limbs. Regrowing amputated human limbs might be within reach.
- Research in genetics and the DNA helix is resulting in new understanding of disease, helping design new medicines and contributing to discoveries about the human race.
- Studies in psychology and consciousness have determined that we actually do have a “sixth sense” and capacities for extrasensory perception (ESP) as well as other surprising and helpful abilities. Research efforts such as the U.S. military and intelligence services’ Project STARGATE into “anomalous cognition” and “remote viewing” have yielded very significant results. University researchers and other investigators have also made progress in these areas.
- Quantum physics research is resulting in interesting views about time and space, gravity, other possible dimensions, the very nature of our existence and how things may work quite differently than we currently understand.
We are exposed to these kinds of developments all the time and there is a lot of information out there about them if we just take a look and open our minds.
For example, this past spring a movie called THE LAST MIMZY was out in theatres. This family film explored several aspects of quantum physics theory, time travel, genetics, ecological disaster, paranormal phenomena, special human abilities and other interesting subjects.
And now, the new HBO show “John from Cincinnati” is exploring similar aspects of emerging developments. This series has already demonstrated in the initial episodes that there is an understanding within the show’s creative team about current research and discoveries.
In fact, “John from Cincinnati” seems to include elements such as creative content, location and other dynamics that are in sync with many efforts to communicate interesting understanding about our everyday realities and possibilities on the horizon.
OPEN MINDS, OPEN HEARTS
What is science or science fiction? Accurate intelligence information or fantasy? Wishful thinking or unrecognized reality?
Below are a few of the questions many people are investigating:
- Are unusual coincidences we experience actually “synchronicity?” That is, are they more than random coincidence? Are there connections we don’t understand?
- Can we heal illness and injury with our minds, and can healing energy be transferred through prayer, the power of consciousness or other methods?
- What is the potential of research into anomalous cognition and remote viewing? The U.S. military and intelligence services’ efforts in these areas were directed toward defense matters. What other objectives can be achieved using these natural abilities?
- Is there an afterlife, Heaven? Is it simply another dimension in physics, in Nature? Are our departed loved ones actually closer to us and our world than we might think? Are they and “angels” actively involved in what is going on here on Earth?
- Are discoveries into and insight about quantum physics indicating that there is a larger, greater intelligence that is somehow guiding us, coaching us and helping us toward some brighter future? If so, how can we help this force or intelligence?
- Are there other surprising phenomena and information that, though difficult to digest and accept, we are able to learn about and deal with in intelligent ways?
- Can we hope for and help facilitate “miracles” or at least very positive outcomes that will help us resolve the many problems the human race currently faces? Can we understand anomalous phenomena enough to assist in facilitating a “breakthrough” of some kind? And if so, how would this manifest itself or emerge?
Good and interesting questions. And there are some answers out there to them.
Many dedicated people are working to make progress in these and other important areas. The significant potential for positive results is something that can be highly motivating.
If we open our minds and hearts, we may find that we are participating in a wonderful effort that will lead us to more discoveries – discoveries that will change the world.

Teleportation method proposed by Australian scientists
Teleportation, a concept popularised in the original Star Trek television series, is edging closer to reality through work being conducted by theorists from The University of Queensland and Australian National University.
“We propose a scheme which allows an atom laser beam to disappear at one location and reappear at another,” Dr Bradley said.
“We feel that our scheme is closer in spirit to the original fictional concept,” Dr Haine said.
“What differentiates our scheme from what is usually termed quantum teleportation is that our scheme does not require the sender and receiver to share entangled states, as there is no measurement step involved in sending the information.
“In this scheme the sender and receiver require a reservoir of extremely cold atoms, known as a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC).
“BEC is a state of matter that occurs when atoms become very cold, (about 100 billionths of a degree about absolute zero).
“Due to a phenomenon known as Bose-Enhancement, all the atoms like to act the same way. This causes the atoms to act as one macroscopic matterwave, rather than a collection of individual atoms.”
Dr Haine said that sending a pulse of atoms towards a trapped condensate (BEC) and illuminating them with a control laser beam, the atoms from the pulse were stimulated to act the same way as the atoms already trapped in the BEC.
This resulted in the emission of a photon. As all the atoms in the BEC had a very well-defined momentum, the photons being emitted would follow the same direction and form a signal beam.
“We can arrange the position and momentum of each atom (quantum information) to be encoded onto the signal beam by carefully adjusting the intensity and wavelength of the control beam,” Dr Haine said.
The signal beam is then sent to a second BEC, which is also illuminated with a control laser. The atoms trapped in the BEC absorb the photon from the signal beam, and in turn are forced to emit the photon into the control beam.
Due to the momentum of releasing the photons, the atoms are kicked out of the BEC. These atoms contain the quantum information of the original atomic pulse which has been transferred to the new pulse, effectively teleporting the original pulse of atoms.
“Our scheme is quite different from what is usually coined quantum teleportation because it gets around the need for the sender and receiver to share entanglement, as the quantum state to be teleported is never actually measured,” Dr Bradley said.
“As our scheme doesn’t rely on the quality of the entanglement, it may be possible to achieve more accurate teleportation via this method,” he said.
Dr Bradley said the team would now embark on more detailed calculations, which took into account more complicated effects including the effects of the atoms colliding with each other, which could degrade the fidelity of the teleportation.
Dr John Close at ANU also has plans to implement these experiments and related ones in the next few years.
