Canadian nurses admitted to "Sicko" for free

TORONTO (Hollywood Reporter) – Canadian distributor Alliance Atlantis Motion Picture Distribution is nursing its way to bigger box office for Michael Moore’s “Sicko.”

The Toronto-based distributor said Friday that it has arranged for major domestic exhibitors to offer free tickets to Canadian nurses to see “Sicko” the week of July 16.

The move follows Moore’s decision to reimburse the United Nurses of Alberta, a western Canadian nursing union, after it ordered 150 tickets to see his latest film, a critique of the U.S. health care system.

“Nurses across Canada are on the front line in the battle against those forces who want to inch the Canadian health care system toward the American way,” Moore said in a statement Friday.

“They know that once a Canadian sees ‘Sicko,’ the last thing they will want is an American-style approach,” he added.

Following suit, Alliance Atlantis said it will offer free tickets to “Sicko” from Monday through Thursday to nurses who show ID when entering Cineplex Entertainment, Empire Theatre or Landmark Theatre multiplexes.

Jim Sherry, Alliance Atlantis executive managing director, said interest in “Sicko” has been exhibited from a number of nursing unions nationwide, and he hoped the free ticket offer will spur “continued dialogue and debate surrounding this remarkable film.”

“Sicko” has pulled in about CAN$1.5 million ($1.43 million) at the domestic box office, according to Alliance Atlantis.

CNN Gets Blitzed by Michael Moore

Michael Moore: “The one expert you had in the piece is a person from a think tank group, who is a big Republican contributor, he’s done business with Blue Cross, with Aventis … don’t you have a right as a journalist, a responsibility actually, to tell the public when you’re using an expert: this person is a Republican, he’s with a think tank that’s connected to Tommy Thompson, you know…”

Dr. Sanjay Gupta: “His only affiliation is with Vanderbilt University. We checked it, Michael.”
