Dr. Edgar Mitchell

I liked how Dr. Mitchell was presented in the following article. It is an excellent overview of what he accomplished to get where he is now.

Ever since I was a child, I have been enamored by the space program. I read endlessly about astronauts, about rockets, the Saturn V, the moon landings, everything. I always envisioned my life as being part of this program that I loved so much. As is the case with most people, my life didn´t turn out quite like I thought it would. It turned out better! I am married to a wonderful woman that I might not have met had my life went where I thought it should.

One of my heroes was an astronaut named Edgar Mitchell. Mitchell was the sixth man to walk on the moon, and holds the record for the longest moon walk on foot, a total of 9 hours and 17 minutes, which occurred on February 9, 1971. I was getting ready to celebrate my second birthday!

Edgar Mitchell attended Carnegie Institute of Technology, obtaining a bachelors degree in industrial management. In 1953, he joined the US Navy, serving as a pilot, eventually becoming a research and test pilot. He continued his education, obtaining a bachelors degree in aeronautical engineering, then a Doctorate of Science in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Becoming an astronaut in 1966, his only space mission was as Landing Module pilot on Apollo 14 with Alan Shepard. It was at this time that his historic moonwalk occurred.

Dr. Mitchell retired from NASA in 1972. Since that time, Mitchell has been trying to get a message out to the American public that we are not alone.

The Admiral Wilson UFO Story

Greetings all…

I chatted with Billy Cox a bit prior to his article, and more to the point, spoke with Admiral Thomas Wilson in late 2006, not long after Dr. Steven Greer’s book – “Hidden Truth, Forbidden Knowledge” — came out in which he mentioned Wilson by name.

I had known about this meeting before Greer published his account. The information came to me through another party. This other source, while not giving me Wilson’s name, gave me some explicit information about the nature of the meeting (top level DoD official who met with Greer, then being denied access to black programs dealing with ET technology).

As I understood it at the time, Greer and Edgar Mitchell met with Wilson in April 1997, and that Wilson took two months to continue looking into the matter. At that point, he reached the program but was denied access to it. My source indicated that the primary people who denied Wilson were not even DoD personnel, but rather private contractors, mainly attorneys.

Who to believe: UFO sightings

In 1952, in an attempt to cope with the public outcry concerning hundreds of reports of UFOs, the U.S. Air Force organized “Project Blue Book” whose primary objective was to collect and analyze citizen reports of UFO sightings. The chief scientific consultant for that project was a well-respected Northwestern University astronomy professor, J. Allen Hynek.

When Hynek first began his UFO research, he was very doubtful that the purported UFO sightings were of any real significance. In fact, during a 1966 congressional hearing on UFOs, he indicated that “the whole subject seemed utterly ridiculous,” and he thought the sightings were a fad which would soon pass. However, after decades of analyzing hundreds of UFO reports from airline pilots, military personnel, police officers, public officials, psychologists, astronomers and other scientists, Hynek said his opinion started to shift. He believed something was going on and serious research was needed to understand what it was. In a 1985 interview with Dennis Stacy, when asked what caused his change of opinion, he responded: It … “was the completely negative and unyielding attitude of the Air Force. They wouldn’t give UFOs the chance of existing even if they were flying up and down the street in broad daylight.” In the late 1970s, Hynek also told a group of students and faculty at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale that his team fudged the data on “Project Blue Book.” He said they could explain only 80 percent of the sightings, and the 20 percent that could not be explained were often omitted from reports, and then used by the team for more in-depth research.

An urgent need for a sustainable planet

Edgar Mitchel, astronaut, is a Disclosure Project witness. In this article he explains how we have to shift our thinking, from a heavy consuming behavior to a more caring one.

by Dr. Edgar Mitchell

We have all asked questions like: Who am I? How did I get here? What is my purpose in life? How did this body come together with this mind, perception and awareness? Most of us allow these heavy, seemingly unanswerable questions to glide by while we stay busy living our lives. But for some seekers, the pursuit of greater knowledge becomes a lifelong quest.

It has been a decade since The Way of the Explorer was first published, and the rush of civilization toward a tipping point has not abated. A major problematic event that will
occur due to our unsustainable growth is peak oil. Peak oil is the point in time at which the discoveries of new petroleum reserves will be less than world consumption. Running out of oil is projected to be imminent by many petroleum geologists.

In 1972, during a speech at an International Rotary Convention in Lausanne, Switzerland, shortly after my epiphany in space, I raised concern about the finite supply of fossil fuels, and its role in sustainability. We are overwhelming our planet’s renewable resources with our numbers and consumption patterns. It is my hope that reaching peak oil will cause citizens of the world to awaken to the larger issues.

As the twenty-first century begins to unfold, we find significant increases in violence and lawlessness in the world, which detracts from the critical need to protect the environment and
the larger issue of the sustainability of our civilization. We humans are not as civilized as we would like to think. The world population more than doubled since 1975 to over six billion people. We are consuming Earth’s natural resources at an alarming rate. Our global natural resource base cannot support a population of more than two billion persons consuming at the level of Western cultures. Clearly, major changes in thinking and lifestyles are required as developing nations naturally aspire to the consumption of the West. Yet our political system is now punishing dissent, freedom of inquiry and efforts at preservation, tactics certain to worsen the drive toward sustainability.

The issue of sustainability, simply put, is illustrated by charting measures of human activity. Beginning noticeably in the twentieth century, all measures display exponential growth. It is obvious that exponential growth cannot continue indefinitely. Many things must be changed. Obviously population growth is the engine driving the system, and addiction to the Western consumption model is not far behind as the major issue.

In Plan B 2.0 (W.W. Norton & Co. 2003), Lester Brown discusses the fundamental areas of consumption and behavior that we as a species must address and modify in order to assure our descendents a reasonably satisfactory lifestyle. The days when we can ignore what our individual decisions and lifestyles are doing to the planet have now passed. Personal responsibility for the greater good must become the mark of an informed and conscious people, then instilled rapidly into those yet unaware. “Raising consciousness” has been a motto of the new age through several decades of civil rights, feminine rights and minority rights activism. Though that phrase sounds trite, even passé, to many ears, the concept of setting aside prejudice and bias in order to support a greater good, and a larger view, is vital to our collective well-being in the near future.

These issues of “sustainability” are too critical and pressing to be ignored. The problem is not simple; it includes many of the deeply embedded concepts of modern lifestyles, traditions and thinking. Untrammeled consumption and growth in all areas of life must be re-examined and subjected to critical thought. Material goods are certainly necessary for sustaining life, but just where does success turn into excess? Those are the fundamental ideas we humans must now address. The scientific and technological genius exhibited beginning in the twentieth century has cracked open the lid of the proverbial Pandora’s Box, and released upon the world the very seeds of our destruction. We must act rapidly to bring our viewing of material abundance as a panacea for happiness under control. The greatest philosophic and religious teachings have been ignored and perverted with regards to this issue. May our descendents forgive us these errors as we struggle to bring our fragile planet Earth back into balance.

Instant Epiphany: The Overview Effect and Cosmic Consciousness

For astronaut Edgar Mitchell, the defining moment of his life was not the moment when, on February 9, 1971, he became the sixth man to walk on the surface of the Moon. Rather, it was something that happened to him on the way back from the Moon – something he would later describe as a “spontaneous epiphany experience”.

As the Apollo 14 Command Module barrelled homewards, Mitchell, during a rare idle moment, looked out through the window. His gaze took in the stars, the Sun, the approaching Earth, all seeming to gracefully revolve about him (though in fact it was the spacecraft itself that was rotating).

And then it happened. Suddenly, Mitchell was no longer experiencing himself as a detached observer looking out at the Universe. Instead, he was truly in the Universe. And so was everything, and everyone, else. Everything was connected. Everything was joined in a unified whole in which matter, time and space were merely different aspects of an all-pervading universal consciousness.

“I actually felt what has been described as an ecstasy of unity,” he later explained. “The thought was so large it seemed inexpressible, and to a large degree it still is.”

Upon his return to Earth, Mitchell – not the same Mitchell who had set off to the Moon, but a new, reborn Mitchell – struggled to understand what had happened to him. He searched for explanations in the works of the great mystics and in nebulous New Age philosophies. He wondered how Science fitted into it all. He wondered what might happen if everyone was to experience the same epiphany. Had the space race inadvertently catapulted humanity to the edge of a fundamental transformation of consciousness?

Writer Frank White describes what happened to Mitchell and other astronauts like him as the Overview Effect. “The Overview Effect is the experience of seeing the Earth from a distance, especially from orbit or the Moon, and realising the inherent unity and oneness of everything on the planet,” explains the author of The Overview Effect: Space Exploration and Human Evolution. “The Effect represents a shift in perception wherein the viewer moves from identification with parts of the Earth to identification with the whole system”.

U.S. Astronauts reveal encounters with apparent Extraterrestrials and UFOs

Edited by Peter Tremblay

Rumors have persisted for years that the astronauts — nearly all of whom are military officers susceptible to being silenced under orders — may have seen something more on the Moon than rocks and dust.

According to transcripts of the technical debriefing following the Apollo 11 mission, astronauts Armstrong, Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin and Michael Collins told of an encounter with a large cylindrical UFO even before reaching the Moon,” U.S. investigative journalist and researcher Jim Marrs documents Mr. Aldrin further officially presented his encounters with apparent Extraterrestrials on CNN’s Larry King Show.

Jim Marrs further presents that Mr. Aldrin said, “The first unusual thing that we saw I guess was one day out or pretty close to the Moon. It had a sizable dimension to it”. Aldrin said the Apollo crew at first thought the object was the Saturn 4 booster rocket (S-IVB); but, he added, “We called the ground and were told the S-IVB was 6,000 miles away.”

Mr. Aldrin described the UFO as a cylinder, while Armstrong said it was “really two rings” Two connected rings”. Collins also said it appeared to be a hollow, tumbling cylinder. He added, “It was a hollow cylinder. But then you could change the focus on the sextant and it would be replaced by this open-book shape. It was really weird.”

Even more strange was the experience of Mr. Aldrin and Mr. Armstrong, after they reached the Moon.

According to an Associated Press story of July 20, 1969 published in the San Bernardino Sun-Telegram, the astronauts sighted eerie lights inside a crater near the point on the Moon where their lunar lander was due to touch down the next day.

On their first sweep around the Moon, Armstrong described a mysterious bright light on the inner wall of the crater Aristarchus, located north of their flight path. “It seems to have a slight amount of florescence to it. The area in the crater is quite bright,” he reported.

“That area is definitely brighter than anything else I can see. There doesn’t appear to be any color involved in it. It looks like an eerie sight,” confirmed Aldrin.

Two astronauts who appear to have broken ranks are Dr. Edgar Mitchell and Gordon Cooper. On The Oprah Winfrey Show on 19 July 1991, Mitchell hinted that all information regarding UFOs has not been released, saying, “I do believe that there is a lot more known about extraterrestrial investigation than is available to the public right now [and] has been for a long time… It’s a long, long story. It goes back to World War II when all of that happened, and is highly classified stuff.”

On Dateline NBC in 1996, Mitchell was even more candid. “I have no firsthand experience, but I have had the opportunity to meet with people from three countries who in the course of their official duties claim to have had personal firsthand encounter experiences… with Extraterrestrials,” he said. Jim Marrs says that “Mitchell flatly stated that some advanced military craft use technology derived from alien spacecraft that have been collected by the U.S. Government.”

Cooper, in a letter read during a 1978 meeting at the United Nations to discuss UFOs, stated, “…I believe that these extraterrestrial vehicles and their crews are visiting this planet form other planets, which are obviously a little more advanced than we are here on Earth.”

Also that year, Mr. Cooper wrote a letter to the ambassador of the Mission of Grenada to the United Nations supporting a UN initiative to study UFOs. In his letter, Cooper stated that astronauts “are very reluctant even to discuss UFOs due to the great numbers of people who have indiscriminately sold fake stories and forged documents, abusing their names and reputations without hesitation. Those few astronauts who have continued to participate in the UFO field have had to do so very cautiously. There are several of us who do believe in UFOs and who have had occasion to see a UFO on the ground, or from an airplane.”

Cooper’s mention of a “UFO on the ground. apparently was a reference to his own experience at Edwards Air Force Base on May 2, 1957. In 1993, Cooper gave this account of the incident: “I had a crew that was filming an installation of a precision landing system we were installing out on the dry lake bed, and they were there with stills and movies, and filmed the whole installation and they came running in to tell me that this UFO, a little saucer, had come down right over them, put down three gear, and landed about 50 yards from them, and as they proceeded to go on over to get a closer shot of it, it lifted up, put the gear in, and disappeared in a rapid rate of speed.

“And so I had to follow my directions as a military… I had to look up the regulations on who I was to call to report this, which I did, and they ordered me to immediately have the film developed, put it in a pouch, and send them by the commanding general’s plane to Washington, which I did. And that was the last I’ve ever heard of the film.”

It is interesting to note indicates Mr. Marrs that, “despite the continued protests that there is no government secrecy regarding UFOs, there is no public report on this incident. Although the event was listed in the Project Blue Book index, a full report and clear photos are suspiciously absent.”

Yet Mr. Cooper, who reported the UFO landing, was selected as a Mercury astronaut only two years later. In a 1996 interview, Mr. Cooper said he discounts any conventional explanation for his experience. Asked his thoughts on UFOs, the astronaut said, “Well, I figured it was somebody coming from some distant place to visit us.”

Steve Omar, another investigative journalist and researcher, indicates that J. Allen Hynek (who investigated U.F.O.s for the U.S. Air Force), Major Donald Keyhoe, Timothy Good (in his book Above Top Secret) suggest secrecy about UFOs and Extraterrestrials. One unquestionably absolute expert we may want to consult is Christopher Kraft, who was Director of the NASA tracking base in Houston during the Apollo Moon missions, when he revealed the following conversation “after” he left his work at NASA:

- ASTRONAUTS NElL ARMSTRONG and BUZZ ALDRIN speaking from the Moon: “Those are giant things. No, no, no …. this is not an optical illusion. No one is going to believe this!”

– MISSION CONTROL (HOUSTON CENTER): “What…what…what? What the hell is happening? What’s wrong with you?”

– ASTRONAUTS: “They’re here under the surface.”

– MISSION CONTROL: “What’s there? Emission interrupted… interference control calling Apollo II.”

– ASTRONAUTS: “We saw some visitors. They were there for awhile, observing the instruments.”

– MISSION CONTROL: ”Repeat your last information.”

– ASTRONAUTS: “I say that there were other spaceships. They’re lined up on the other side of the crater.”

– MISSION CONTROL: “Repeat…repeat!”

- ASTRONAUTS: “Let us sound this orbita ….. In 625 to 5… automatic relay connected… My hands are shaking so badly I can’t do anything. Film it? God, if these damned cameras have picked up anything… what then?”

– MISSION CONTROL: “Have you picked up anything?”

– ASTRONAUTS: “I didn’t have any film at hand. Three shots of the saucers or whatever they were that were ruining the film.”

– MISSION CONTROL: “Control, control here. Are you on your way? Is the uproar with the U.F.O.s. over?

– ASTRONAUTS: “They’ve landed there. There they are and they are watching us.”

– MISSION CONTROL: “The mirrors, the mirrors…have you set them up?”

> – ASTRONAUTS: “Yes, they’re in the right place. But whoever made those space ships surely can come tomorrow and remove them. Over and out.”

There is an unconfirmed report, also documented by Steve Omar, that when Buzz Aldrin opened the door after landing on the Moon, he immediately saw a transparent etherical being staring at him outside. Welcome to the Moon?? Allegedly, NASA Director Kraft added that there was a public and a secret private A.S.A. radio frequency between Moon and Mission Control and that the conversation above took place during a mysterious two minute interruption in public transmissions. To prove it is the truth, hundreds of independent CIVILIAN radio operators with powerful VHF equipment separately reported hearing the AME spaceship report from the Apollo moon-walkers!

“Soviet radio operators also picked it up and published it in Moscow. Another mysterious radio message from the Moon was broadcast on French public television only one time before it was censored AFTER it leaked out. That transmission appeared to be a mysterious clearly spoken ALIEN LANGUAGE,” further reports Steve Omar.

The famous French historian and author Robbert Charroux published the transmission which has been suppressed in the U.S. It came from U.S. astronaut Worden who transmitted it to NASA, and expert linguists have been unable to translate the message.
