UFO sighting prompts further claims

MORE readers claim to have seen a mysterious purple object over Basingstoke.

Following a report by the Gazette, the newsdesk received calls and e-mails from readers saying they, too, had seen a strange craft in the sky on Saturday, August 4.

As reported last week, lorry driver Kris Reed, 29, claimed to have spotted the pear-shaped object from his home in Richmond Road, Oakridge, Basingstoke.

He said it hovered overhead before moving off with a rumbling noise.

Learning and development assistant Helaine Brownhill, from Norden Close, claimed she, too, saw something other-worldly.

She said: “At about 11pm on the Saturday, a car alarm had been going off and I went to my daughter’s room to see where it was coming from.

“I saw a large reddish orb appear in the sky over the Houndmills area before very slowly moving across the sky and towards town. It stopped mid-air and rotated in a circle.

“It was moving too slowly to be a helicopter or the police plane that sometimes flies over. I went to get my husband to come and see, but, by the time he came, it had disappeared.”

Andrew Keeble, 64, a taxi driver from New Road, Bramley, claims to have watched the same UFO six days later.

He said: “I was taking two passengers to Winklebury and, suddenly, we caught sight of this bright deep orangey-red light flickering through the trees.

“We went nearer and sat in the car watching it hover almost above us for about four or five minutes, before losing sight of it behind some trees.

“About half-an-hour later, I was in between jobs in Oakridge and saw the same thing again.

“I got out of my car to look at it and it vanished instantly.”

As reported last week, a Ministry of Defence spokesman said sightings are only investigated if considered a potential threat.

An Unknown Dark Object – Toronto, Ontario

Date: July 21, 2007
Time: Approx: 9:15 p.m.

Location of Sighting: Toronto Ontario.
Number of witnesses: 3 + (?)
Number of objects: 1
Shape of objects: Very difficult to describe.

HBCC UFO Research Note: Seeing there were alot of people in the immediate area, and since the sighting took place over downtown Toronto, there must have been others who saw this event take place. So if anyone else did observe this unusual object would you please file a report to HBCC UFO Research.

Full Description of event/sighting: On Saturday July 21 at approximately 9:15 pm (I never thought to check my watch at the time though), I saw an object in the sky in the middle of the city of Toronto.

I was on a busy roof-top patio full of people. I was looking at a construction crane which was to the north of where I was and noticed something in the sky. Initially I thought it was nothing more than a black garbage bag blowing around. It then occurred to me that it was not windy outside at all (it was a beautiful calm, clear evening) and that the object was quite high up (although I could not see the ground and the object at the same time). When I realized that there was something odd about what I was seeing, I pointed it out to the person I was with, it turns out they too had been watching it in an attempt to determine what it was. We both agreed that the object was abnormal and quickly tried to get the attention of several other people who were standing/talking with us. Few took any note, but there were at least three of us that watched the object move through the sky.

The object moved from north to south (in the direction of lake Ontario). The object was moving very smoothly, it did not change direction, it was very consistent and did not appear to change its elevation. The size is extremely hard to determine since there was nothing to compare it to (it passed behind a building, but I do not recall it passing in front of anything). I also could not see the ground from where I was so I could not determine its elevation or make a reasonable guess as to its size or distance from me. From where I was the object was quite small (smaller than the moon for example). The object was completely black, it had no lights on it and I was unable to even tell what material it may have been.

The shape of the object is surprisingly hard for me to explain. It was definitely not a plane as it had no wings, nor was it a helicopter. I would not call it a saucer because it was not completely round, nor was it flat, but it did look like it had something protruding from the top. My surroundings were noisy, so I cannot determine whether the object made any noise but when helicopters move through the city they make a lot of noise and there was nothing noticeable coming from the object. It moved at a good pace, approximately the speed of a plane, maybe a bit faster. We followed it until a high rise office building blocked it from our view. In total the sighting time felt like a long time but was probably no more than 2-3 minutes. Again, the object was definitely not a plane or a helicopter, it was around dusk and the object had no lights on it at all.

This sighting occurred in the middle of the city of Toronto (north of Bloor St. near Bay St.) on a beautiful Saturday night, the streets were busy, we could not have been the only people to see it could we?

Aylmer, Ontario – Cylinder And Black Dot Observed

Date: July 22, 1978 Time: 1:30 p.m.

Location of Sighting: Eastern sky driving towards Aylmer.
Number of witnesses: 2
Number of objects: 2
Shape of objects: Cylindrical, and white, tiny black circle.

Full Description of event/sighting: We were driving admiring the white clouds in the blue sky, when an object caught my eye. It looked like a flat cloud, it was sitting totally still. I told my boyfriend to look, because it looked kind of weird. We were both staring at it when it just completely vanished, we both let out a big whoa, then right where it vanished was a tiny black dot that was moving around behind a cloud, at which time the dot disappeared and the cylinder reappeared. It vanished again, and that was it.

GLOBAL WARMING IS EVAPORATING ARCTIC PONDS: NEW STUDY

High Arctic ponds – the most common source of surface water in many polar regions – are now beginning to evaporate due to recent climate warming, say two of Canada’s leading environmental scientists.

Queen’s biology professor John Smol, Canada Research Chair in Environmental Change, and Marianne Douglas (professor of eEarth and aAtmospheric sSciences and director of the Canadian Circumpolar Institute at the University of Alberta) will publish their startling conclusions this week in the on-line edition of the journal, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

“The final ecological threshold for an aquatic ecosystem is loss of water,” says Dr. Smol. “These sites have now crossed that threshold.”

Since 1983, Drs. Smol and Douglas have been regularly sampling the water quality and biota of about 40 ponds on Cape Herschel, east-central Ellesmere Island, in the Canadian High Arctic. Polar ecosystems such as these are very sensitive to the effects of climatic and other environmental changes, they note in their paper. “In many respects, they are like the ‘miner’s canaries’ of the planet, showing the first signs of warming.”

But this new discovery by the Canadian researchers has surprised even them. In the 1990s they were alarmed when they began to recognize a trend of declining water levels and changes in water chemistry. When they arrived to begin another field season in July of 2006 (the warmest year on record for that portion of the Arctic), some of the ponds were dry, and others had dramatically reduced water levels.

“This study shows the value of long-term monitoring programs,” says Dr. Douglas. “Had we just arrived at Cape Herschel last year, we would have surmised that these were naturally temporary ponds. But we know instead that this was not the case – these had been permanent water bodies for millennia.”

As well as monitoring the ponds for 24 years, the researchers have also reconstructed ecological trends over the past several thousand years in some of the ponds, using paleoecological techniques. In a controversial 1994 paper published in the journal Science, they showed that the ponds existed for millennia, but that, beginning in the 19th century, they underwent marked ecological changes, consistent with warming.

“We had a bit of a rough ride with that paper for a few years, but now there is almost universal scientific consensus concerning our 1994 conclusions,” says Dr. Douglas. In 2005, she and Dr. Smol, along with 24 co-authors, used similar techniques to document widespread ecological changes, consistent with warming, across the circumpolar Arctic.

However, the ecological changes recorded in the 1994 study pale in comparison to those noted in the current paper, where some sites had completely dried up by July.

While some subarctic lakes have recently disappeared because the permafrost that formed a largely waterproof barrier has melted, this is not the case here, say Drs. Smol and Douglas. Instead, the high Arctic ponds are evaporating due to warming. By measuring changes in water quality over their 24-year sampling window, they have shown that the concentration of salts has been steadily increasing.

Using the analogy of a pot of soup simmering on a stove, Dr. Smol explains: ”If you take the lid off, it is similar to what we are observing in these ponds. The soup will slowly decrease in volume and it will get saltier and saltier as the water evaporates, leaving the salts behind.” The same process is happening with the Cape Herschel ponds, he continues. Water levels are declining and the remaining water is more concentrated with evaporation due to warming.

Another disturbing finding was the drying-up of neighbouring wetlands. In the 1980s, portions of their study region were also characterized by water-saturated wetlands, where the team would need to don hip waders to sample the surface pools of water persisting throughout the summer. However, in 2006, the wetlands had dried to such an extent that they could easily be ignited with a lighter. “The ecological consequences of shifting wetlands such as these from carbon sink to potential carbon sources are frightening,” they say.

Ponds, the dominant source of surface waters in many Arctic regions, are “hot spots” of biodiversity, as well as habitat for many birds, insects, and other organisms, the researchers point out. The resulting ecological changes will likely cascade throughout the ecosystem.

“In the past, researchers like us have sometimes been accused of being alarmist when we discussed climate warming,” says Dr. Smol, winner of the 2004 NSERC Herzberg Gold Medal as Canada’s top scientist or engineer. “We now think we have been overly optimistic – the speed and magnitude of environmental changes are worse than even we imagined!”

The research was funded primarily by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada and the Polar Continental Shelf Project.

A Silvery White Round Object – Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

Posted: July 14, 2007

Date: July 8, 2007 Time: Daytime sighting.

Approach Direction: Southern Sky. Departure Direction: n/a. Witness Direction: Southern.

Description: I was returning from the downtown area, travelling in a southern direction on the Airport Parkway approaching the Hunt club exist when I saw this odd object in the sky. It was a rather intermittent cloud covered sky and there were fast patches of clear blue sky as well. As I was approaching the Hunt Club exit, I noticed this very silvery-white, somewhat round object in the sky at about 20-28 thousand feet. I captured my attention because it was so bright due to the sun coming through the clouds in the north and shining it’s rays upon it. It sparkled like a diamond would have if put into the sunlight. And It was just there all of a sudden, which also caught my attention.

As I watched it, and thought it was a cool reflection of a plane, at first, realized that it wasn’t moving but appeared to be stationary. I had a clear view as it was straight in my line of sight through my windshield as I travelled towards it. I would say the object was hovering high above the army base stationed there. I look at it for about 1 minute as I tried to decipher what it was and then resigned myself to it being a star. Mind you the only one out at that time (7:45pm) and with the sun shining through so brightly. And, then I blink…and it was just gone…like it had appeared.

I found it strange and was wondering if anyone else noticed? I’m an educated professional and mature individual that wants to know the truth about all this.

Thanks.

Color/Shape: somewhat oval in shape with bright shiny and smooth silver metal. I saw no lights on the object.

Height & Speed: Height about 27 thousand feet fairly low to the horizon.

Downtown Toronto, Ontario A Oval Shaped Light Wobbles

Date: July 12, 2007 Time: 3:30 a.m.

Location of Sighting: Downtown Toronto on top of Merchandise Building at church and Dundas.

Number of witnesses: 1

Number of objects: 1 Shape of objects: Oval.

Full Description of event/sighting: I was on the rooftop patio of the building at the time having a cigarette. When I looked up to the sky there was an oval shaped light that seemed to have appeared from space. It then was travelling straight but wobbled slightly from east to west overtop the downtown buildings above the CN Tower, but below the clouds. It was travelling as fast as a jet fighter. It then stopped and seemed to have disappeared west. This all occurred in about 3 minutes.

Two “Mile-Wide UFO” sightings reported in mainstream news

Ian Brockwell
June 23, 2007

It is hard to say which is more incredible, the sighting of the largest UFOs ever seen, or the fact that this sighting managed to appear on FOXNews!

Aurigny Airlines captain Ray Bowyer was flying near Alderney when he spotted a “cigar shaped brilliant white light”. The UFO was 2,000 feet up and stationary, and at first he thought the object was about 10 miles away and perhaps a Boeing 737. However, he later realized that it was 40 miles away and because of the distance said “It could have been as much as a mile wide”

As he approached Guernsey, he then noticed another object “identical” to the first, but further to the west.

The captain’s description of the “UFO”, seen through binoculars, was “It was a very sharp, thin yellow object with a green area”. The second UFO was visible for 9 minutes.

Whilst Ray Bowyer has not suggested that the object was from “another world”, he did say “I have never seen anything like it before in all my years of flying”

The UFO sighting was also witnessed by two passengers and a Blue Islands airline pilot. Although the report has been made public, as usual, some parts of this have apparently been withheld.

With several “reliable” witnesses to the sighting, we have been spared the normal rapid response that it isn’t some alien craft. However, you can be fairly certain that some “excuse” will be forthcoming, and we shall have to hope that the authorities do not try to insult our intelligence with the “weather balloon” routine again.

Hopefully, a serious investigation will be carried out to try and determine the nature of the object, and whilst there is no proof that this was an alien craft, it is difficult to imagine what else could be this big and have the ability to remain stationary (and then move off).

If intelligent alien beings exist, and it is a logical assumption that they do, it is also not unreasonable that they are perhaps monitoring our planet in some way. With the risk of another World War growing ever more possible (thanks to the current US administration) and the threat of a global catastrophe due to climatic changes, maybe some alien intervention can be expected in the not too distant future?

Should some “outside” help be on the way, let’s hope it comes sooner, rather than later.
