Fuel Cell System Generates Electricity, Japan

Genepax Co Ltd explained the technologies used in its new fuel cell system “Water Energy System (WES),” which uses water as a fuel and does not emit CO2.
The system can generate power just by supplying water and air to the fuel and air electrodes, respectively, the company said at the press conference, which took place June 12, 2008, at the Osaka Assembly Hall.

The basic power generation mechanism of the new system is similar to that of a normal fuel cell, which uses hydrogen as a fuel. According to Genepax, the main feature of the new system is that it uses the company’s membrane electrode assembly (MEA), which contains a material capable of breaking down water into hydrogen and oxygen through a chemical reaction.

Though the company did not reveal the details, it “succeeded in adopting a well-known process to produce hydrogen from water to the MEA,” said Hirasawa Kiyoshi, the company’s president. This process is allegedly similar to the mechanism that produces hydrogen by a reaction of metal hydride and water. But compared with the existing method, the new process is expected to produce hydrogen from water for longer time, the company said.

With the new process, the cell needs only water and air, eliminating the need for a hydrogen reformer and high-pressure hydrogen tank. Moreover, the MEA requires no special catalysts, and the required amount of rare metals such as platinum is almost the same as that of existing systems, Genepax said.

Unlike the direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC), which uses methanol as a fuel, the new system does not emit CO2. In addition, it is expected to have a longer life because catalyst degradation (poisoning) caused by CO does not occur on the fuel electrode side. As it has only been slightly more than a year since the company completed the prototype, it plans to collect more data on the product life.

At the conference, Genepax unveiled a fuel cell stack with a rated output of 120W and a fuel cell system with a rated output of 300W. In the demonstration, the 120W fuel cell stack was first supplied with water by using a dry-cell battery operated pump. After power was generated, it was operated as a passive system with the pump turned off.

This time, the voltage of the fuel cell stack was 25-30V. Because the stack is composed of 40 cells connected in series, it is expected that the output per cell is 3W or higher, the voltage is about 0.5-0.7V, and the current is about 6-7A. The power density is likely to be not less than 30mW/cm2 because the reaction area of the cell is 10 x 10 cm.

Meanwhile, the 300W fuel cell system is an active system, which supplies water and air with a pump. In the demonstration, Genepax powered the TV and the lighting equipment with a lead-acid battery charged by using the system. In addition, the 300W system was mounted in the luggage room of a compact electric vehicle “Reva” manufactured by Takeoka Mini Car Products Co Ltd, and the vehicle was actually driven by the system.

Genepax initially planned to develop a 500W system, but failed to procure the materials for MEA in time and ended up in making a 300W system.

For the future, the company intends to provide 1kw-class generation systems for use in electric vehicles and houses. Instead of driving electric vehicles with this system alone, the company expects to use it as a generator to charge the secondary battery used in electric vehicles.

Although the production cost is currently about ¥2,000,000 (US$18,522), it can be reduced to ¥500,000 or lower if Genepax succeeds in mass production. The company believes that its fuel cell system can compete with residential solar cell systems if the cost can be reduced to this level.

Corrupt Politics is Covering Up the Truth About Global Warming

Another Figure speaking up against coverup!

James Hansen, head of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York, is widely respected as one of the world’s leading climate scientists. He says the public is being lied to and duped by special interest groups about the severity of the threat that global warming poses. He also claims that policy makers and big oil executives are sacrificing public interest to line their own pockets.

“The problem is not political will, it’s the alligator shoes – the lobbyists. It’s the fact that money talks in Washington, and that democracy is not working the way it’s intended to work,” says Hansen.

Hansen told US Congress earlier this week that CO2 is already almost certainly at unsafe levels, and the situation will only become more dangerous the longer we continue to largely ignore the problem. Currently, CO2 concentration is 385 parts per million and is rising by 2ppm a year.

THIRTEEN UFOs spinning in the skies

A SHAKEN soldier told last night how he saw THIRTEEN UFOs spinning in the skies above his military barracks.

Corporal Mark Proctor was among three squaddies who spotted the objects while out on night patrol.

He filmed them on his mobile phone and reported the close encounter to Army top brass.

Ministry of Defence experts were studying his report and video yesterday — after ordering Mark and his pals NOT to say anything else about the incident.

A Message from The Orion Project Core Team

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

We are in the midst of some very exciting new developments. Donations are on the rise, volunteers are flooding in faster than we can assign them tasks (not a bad problem to have!), and we are generating a lot of enthusiastic and supportive discussion both on and offline.

In short, we have gotten the ball rolling, and now it’s time to sustain and build our momentum. But first, let us remind you of why we started this project:

Gas Prices Chart

Gas prices are now averaging $4+ dollars a gallon and we even hear reports that it can go as high as $10-12.50 within a few years. This threatens not only our standard of living, but the way of life for people world wide. If we stay on this path, the only solutions are to drastically reduce our standard of life or turn towards devouring other natural resources that took eons to create.

This is why we started The Orion Project. We will not stand for this to happen when we know there are readily available and viable alternatives.

It is not an exaggeration to say that the work of The Orion Project could be the turning point in changing the world’s energy situation. Humanity is faced with the proverbial fork in the road. The Orion Project’s road less traveled has actually been blazed by numerous inventors before us. The problem is, these inventors didn’t have the necessary tools, security and support that we can now provide. This is why we are confident that we will succeed in bringing the gift of commercially available over-unity energy devices to the world, by selling them in first world countries, and by fundraising to donate them to third world countries.

And this is why we are so passionate about achieving a breakthrough in energy generation, why we ask you to donate and become a part of this mission. Please keep reading for significant and exciting updates that are a result of our efforts and your support. And don’t be bashful to spread the news to anyone willing to listen. We greatly appreciate your continued support.

Best wishes,

The Orion Project Core Team

P.S. In order to inspire donors to “go big”, Dr. Greer has agreed to sign a limited number of copies of his latest book, Hidden Truth – Forbidden Knowledge, to give to all donors who contribute at the $500 level or above. To those who have already donated, all you have to do is donate the remaining amount and we’ll send it along to you as well. For donations that greatly exceed $500, we have other gifts in store for you.

Dr. Greer Video Series

As part of our ongoing video series, we’ll be releasing a new segment of our interviews with Dr. Steven Greer with every newsletter. The topic of our latest segment is The Breakthrough Campaign:

YouTube Video

Watch the entire video series on our website.

Mr. ‘Q’ and a Possible Breakthrough

The response to our original Mr. Q article was significant. Therefore we are very excited to give you this very promising update. We recently sent another expert (We’ll call him Mr P to protect his privacy) to help Mr. Q in optimizing the pulse motor generator.

Much progress was made over a 100+ man hour endeavor. There was also a very intriguing chance event… in which the machine was disconnected from the power source, yet sped UP instead of down. The increase in RPMs was so large that it ended up frying the circuitry! This might be a very significant result if it can be recreated and harnessed, putting us well on our way of achieving our goal ahead of schedule. Read the full article on our website.

Sidenote: For those who want to understand how a pulse motor generator works, we wrote up a very simple draft explaining how this technology works. It should give you a good idea of the strategy of such a device.

Fundraising Update

The Orion Project now has several projects going on with inventors across the United States, funded out of our own pockets and with Angel funding. Once we have succeeded with our three million dollar Breakthrough Campaign, we will bring all of these projects under one roof, allowing our inventors to collaborate and synergize, further accelerating their rate of progress.

Many of you who are receiving this newsletter donated not just the minimum request of $30, but went far beyond that! We can’t thank you enough. We even had another $10,000 donor jump on board since our first newsletter went out. We live in exciting times.

The ball is rolling, and it is up to all of us to sustain and grow this momentum. If you haven’t already, please make a donation today.

We are also looking for large donors to contribute in parallel to our grass roots effort. If you know of anyone who could contribute a sizable donation to the cause, please contact us and we’ll make special efforts to address any questions or concerns they may have.

We are also in the process of growing our volunteer program by creating new videos, printable materials and other resources to help you help us publicize the project. These tools are designed to assist you in reaching out to others in your community and letting them know why this is important for them and for the world.

Announcements

Project Director Dr. Steven Greer will be making numerous guest appearances this year. Here are some upcoming events:

  • July 14th – IIIHS Conference – Montreal, Canada – Keynote lecture 8-9:30 pm

Thank You!

We can’t stress enough how much we appreciate all the support– be it from donors, volunteers or kind words. With every donation and every volunteer that comes knocking at our door, we are constantly reminded of the importance of our task at hand… and simultaneously thrilled to know that others believe as we do.

Disclosure Project Update – July 9 Lecture in Denver, Colorado

ANNOUNCEMENT

DR. STEVEN GREER AND THE DISCLOSURE PROJECT

DENVER PRESENTATION

WEDNESDAY JULY 9, 2008

7:30 PM

Steven M. Greer MD, the founder and director of The Disclosure Project (www.DisclosureProject.org) will be in Denver CO on July 9, 2008 at Turnhalle in the Tivoli.

Dr. Greer will be presenting a summary of over 500 government, military, intelligence and corporate witnesses to UFO events and projects and will be discussing the implications of the issue. Dr. Greer, who has personally briefed heads of state, members of Congress, a sitting CIA Director and other senior government officials on the UFO matter will provide an overview of the subject and expose the reasons behind the continuing secrecy.

Key to this secrecy is the existence of Unacknowledged Special Access Projects (USAPs) that operate outside of Presidential and Congressional oversight and that are beholden to special interests in the corporate, financial and energy sectors.

The energy and propulsion systems used by so-called UFOs (or extraterrestrial vehicles) has been studied for over 60 years using taxpayer funds and the disclosure of this vital information would completely replace the need for oil, gas, coal and nuclear power.

Dr. Greer states that “In light of the growing energy and environmental crisis, it is imperative that the people of the United States know the truth and work to see that full Disclosure occurs as soon as possible. The mistake of classifying as top secret this information in the 1940s and 1950s has now resulted in a genuine world emergency that requires the thoughtful attention of every concerned citizen.”

Mr. Jeff Peckman, who is heading up the Extraterrestrial Affairs Commission Denver ballot initiative, will also be present and make a brief presentation on that project.

The presentation is open to the media and the public.

Admission: A nominal admission fee of $5.00 will be collected at the door to cover expenses.

      (No advance ticket sales.)

The HPV vaccine, one year later

From the Canadian Women’s Health Network

In June 2007, the Canadian Women’s Health Network published the policy paper, “HPV, Vaccines, and Gender: Policy Considerations,” to raise questions and concerns about plans to begin mass vaccination programs against infections with some types of the human papilloma virus (HPV) among schoolgirls in Canada. The last sentence of the paper reads: “At this point in time, there are more questions than answers.”

One year later, there are perhaps even more questions than answers. Nevertheless, provinces and territories have either started school-based vaccination programs, or plan to begin them in the fall of 2008. Thus, parents across the country will be faced with the difficult decision of whether or not to allow their daughters to be vaccinated. And there remain concerns that they will too often lack the full information needed to give authentic informed consent.

We continue to ask: What’s the rush when cervical cancer rates are low and have already decreased substantially through the provision of Pap screening programs? Why was the vaccine campaign launched by the Minister of Finance in a budget speech even before the group set up to harmonize immunization policies in Canada issued its recommendations—a report that we still await? Why spend $300 million for a vaccine when the funding could be applied to effective, holistic sexual and reproductive health programs? In fact, we are concerned that the vaccine may actually divert resources from improving Pap screening so that all provinces might have an organized program.

Research has shown that most sexually active people will experience an HPV infection, but that 80 to 90% of these will clear spontaneously within two years. Only four types of the virus are covered by the vaccine—two of which are associated with the development of cervical cancer—and we still don’t know how long protection lasts. So, even those vaccinated will continue to need Pap tests as they get older.

The criticism that has been hurled at those raising questions about the vaccination program, including those speaking on behalf of the CWHN, has been quite surprising. This is especially true for the CWHN authors of the commentary “Human papillomavirus, vaccines and women’s health: questions and cautions,” published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal in August 2007. We are certainly not the only ones asking questions. In fact, the 56 experts on vaccines and sexual health convened by Health Canada in 2005 to review the vaccine approval process also wanted answers to these questions before they recommended approval of a vaccination program. Unfortunately, they have been fairly silent since then.

For voicing our concerns at CWHN, we have been called irresponsible and even lumped in with fundamentalist groups opposed to the vaccine for moral reasons (worried that the vaccine will promote promiscuous behaviour) and with others who are opposed to vaccines in general. For the record, we at the CWHN are not opposed to the HPV vaccine in itself. Rather, we are opposed to a mass vaccination program at this time in the absence of sufficient long-term evidence of its effectiveness, and in the absence of public debate and full, unbiased information.

A major source of public information on the HPV vaccine has been the media. But, with a few exceptions, media coverage has not provided the full story and, in many cases, has instead misinformed the public. Gardasil is not a “vaccine against cancer,” and we do not now know if it will “prevent 70% of cervical cancers” as has been published in the national media. Yet, this misinformation, which is based more on clever marketing by the manufacturer, Merck Frosst, than on good journalism, continues to appear. The exceptions, for example in the Globe and Mail and the CBC, are investigative reports about the lobbying by Merck Frosst that took place prior to the federal government’s $300 million announcement, and articles that go into detail about the available scientific evidence, as well as articles critical of the government process to approve the vaccine and its failure to provide adequate public information.

In PEI, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, uptake of the vaccination programs which began last September has been high (around 80%), but in Ontario only 50% of girls eligible for the vaccine have actually received it so far. School-based vaccination programs usually have very high uptake rates, and the low rate in Ontario, where most of the investigative media reports were published, may be because parents have decided to wait until further evidence is known.

The governments of Quebec, British Columbia and Manitoba all recently announced they will be unrolling vaccination programs in the fall of 2008. Without the usual National Immunization Strategy to guide provinces in the implementation of a vaccination program (the Strategy was not used in this case), the authorities in Quebec have decided to provide only two doses of the vaccine to Grade 4 girls, then a third shot when the girls reach Grade 9. The vaccine is approved for use in three doses within six months, so Quebec’s plan would be an “off-label” (unapproved) use of the vaccine. A clinical trial is currently underway to evaluate this method, which may or may not prove to be effective in the long term, but it has not yet concluded.

HPV testing is another area of study. The BC Cancer Agency is conducting the HPV FOCAL Study to determine if a test for HPV in women can replace the usual Pap test, allowing women to be screened less frequently. The study is expected to last from two to four years. There are also studies examining whether or not boys should be vaccinated. While it may be shown that vaccinating boys is not an effective method of HPV prevention, the evidence is not yet available. In the meantime, women and girls are being vaccinated and are certainly bearing a disproportionate burden in the prevention of HPV infection.

Some groups are encouraging governments to put vaccination programs on hold through calls for moratoria, such as in Quebec where plans are in place to begin vaccinations this fall (see sidebar). Beyond our borders, a similar campaign for a moratorium on the HPV vaccine is underway in Spain. And the government of Minnesota in the United States did put its HPV vaccine program on hold to take the time to adequately prepare for implementation, including properly educating the public and determining the sustainability of funding in the long term. In the meantime, the Minnesota government has stated it will continue to depend on its effective Pap screening program for the prevention of cervical cancer.

In Canada, it’s not too late for governments to review the decision to implement mass vaccination programs—to wait until more questions are answered, or at the very least until they have provided a comprehensive public education program. Provincial and territorial governments also need to plan for when the federal government’s contribution of $300 million runs out two years from now, how they will sustain such a costly program. In the meantime, governments could focus on improving Pap screening and sex education—for both girls and boys. Research may later show that the HPV vaccine does help prevent cervical cancer, but for now the data do not merit a mass vaccination program.

As we’ve said from the beginning of this story, the CWHN is not anti-vaccine—not even anti HPV vaccine. But we are critical of how this vaccine was introduced and will continue to keep our eyes on this ball. We encourage others to keep asking questions too and to demand the public education on the HPV vaccine necessary for parents and girls to make informed decisions before the next round of vaccinations takes place.

Quebec groups call for a moratorium on HPV vaccination campaign

By Nathalie Parent
>From the Fédération du Québec pour le planning des naissances

In September 2007, the Quebec government announced that it would launch a human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination campaign for girls to begin in the 2008 school year, joining other Canadian provinces that have announced similar vaccination programs. The details of the campaign, with an estimated cost of $70 million over three years, were announced in April by the Quebec government stating that the vaccine will be administered to nine-year-old girls in Grade 4 and 14-year-old girls in Grade 9.

The campaign was criticized as soon as it was announced in September, in particular by the Réseau québécois d’action pour la santé des femmes (RQASF) [Quebec women's health network], which called for a moratorium, a position supported by the Regroupement des maisons de jeunes du Québec [Organization of Quebec youth centres], Women and Health Protection and the Canadian Women’s Health Network. The groups urged that the millions of dollars earmarked for the campaign be directed toward prevention and toward improving access to health care for women, in particular for adolescent girls.

In November, the call for a moratorium was taken up by more than thirty groups and individuals representing a variety of interests at an all-day event, “Journée d’étude sur le vaccin contre le VPH,” organized by the Fédération du Québec pour le planning des naissances (FQPN) to examine and discuss the vaccination program. Even after discussions with the public health officials attending the meeting, participants were not convinced of the need to launch such an extensive vaccination campaign so quickly. They felt that the data required to support such a decision were still insufficient, in particular with respect to the duration of vaccine-induced immunity, the need for repeat doses, the vaccine’s long-term effects, etc. They also questioned the approach favoured by public health officials, which is based on expensive new technologies, instead of promoting awareness, prevention and sex education.

Disappointed with discussions with public health officials, the FQPN addressed its call for a moratorium directly in a letter to the Minister of Health and Social Services. The Federation demanded concrete steps aimed at countering the influence of the manufacturer of the proposed vaccine, Gardasil, through increased public education and awareness. The letter also calls attention to the following concerns:

* That the planned vaccination program is not in keeping with a comprehensive view of health or with an essential prevention approach.
* The need to adopt concrete measures to increase access to and improve monitoring of Pap test screening. It is worth noting that the participation rate for women in Quebec is among the lowest in Canada.
* The importance of developing consistent and structured sex education programs.
* The decision to invest in a new and extremely costly vaccine without considering other sexual health issues, in particular prevention of the main sexually transmitted infections, such as Chlamydia, which infects more then 12,500 girls every year in Quebec.
* Public health officials’ unwillingness to undertake an independent and complete information campaign on the realities of cervical cancer, HPV, the vaccine and screening tests.
* The government’s inaction in the face of marketing strategies and aggressive advertising by the manufacturer of Gardasil.

The Minister’s response, delivered by his national director of public health, was a disappointment to the FQPN. Reiterating his intention to proceed with the campaign, the Minister pledged his unconditional support for the recommendations of the Comité sur l’immunisation du Québec [Quebec Committee on Immunization]. In its December report, the Committee recommended that all girls in Grade 4 be vaccinated against HPV in two doses, at the same time as the Hepatitis B vaccination. When the full details of the program were released in April, the government announced that a third dose will be given when the girls reach Grade 9, and that girls under 18 years may receive the free vaccine on request. Finally, the Minister made no reference to the issue of the manufacturer’s influence; moreover, he said nothing at all about the need for awareness and independent information.

Now that it seems unlikely that the government will change its position, the FQPN will continue to raise public awareness about the many concerns related to the Quebec vaccination campaign. For anyone interested in learning more or indeed in getting more involved in this issue, the FQPN invites your participation.

Gotta love Canadian Tire!

I finally managed to get the Jar and the cap required. The Canadian Tire on West Hunt Club had both the plastic cap and the right size Jar for the experiment. I also got the automotive hose there. Probably the most expensive part so far.

And how convenient to have a PetSmart not too far to get the valve as well.

I got the Plexiglas from Home Depot on Baseline, just east of Woodroff.

All I am missing now is the bubbler cap and I can complete my first experiment.

There is some great resources on YouTube and all over the Internet for more material, tips and tricks!

NAFTA Growing Resistance & Calls for Renegotiation & Oversight
A power point presentation by Janet M Eaton, PhD, academic, researcher, activist and free trade critic. June 8, 2008
This 60 slide power point with text, quotes, references and images chronicles the resistance to NAFTA that is rapidly emerging across North America. Civil Society groups, political parties, elected representatives, public policy centres and coalitions in Mexico, Canada and the US, as well as cross border coalitions, are all calling for the renegotiation of NAFTA.
It also documents US State level free trade oversight legislation, federal level promises that have emerged in the Democratic Primaries, and US Federal legislation in the works, including the June 4, 2008 T.R.A.D.E Act, all of which reflect growing public opinion to renegotiate NAFTA and free trade in general.

It is hoped by documenting and exposing the breadth and extent of this movement that citizens and politicians alike will recognize the imperative for action. With the significant evidence of failure of the present `free trade´ system and the extent of resistance highlighted herein, the recalcitrant and reactionary calls of elite proponents of NAFTA, to maintain the status quo, must be challenged.
Links to other power points on Globalization, NAFTA, and the SPP and their impacts are found at the end of this power point.
Please forward for general use in increasing awareness & encouraging political action !

WTC7 Collapse announced by CNN before it happens!

The collapse of the WTC7 building was obviously scripted by the big mainstream media news agencies. The BBC reported the collapse hours before it happened and now it turns out, so did CNN. Coincidence? (Philip)

CNN announced that WTC 7 “has either collapsed or is collapsing” about an hour before the event.

This YouTube video is an excerpt from the CNN’s live television broadcast on 9/11/2001. At about 01:58 in the clip, anchor Aaron Brown states that it’s about 4:14 Eastern Daylight Time. That means that when the he makes the announcement at the beginning of the clip, it is about 4:12

The following is a transcript of the two-minute excerpt:

“We are getting information now that one of other buildings, building 7, in the world trade center complex is on fire and has either collapsed or is collapsing. I .. I .. You to be honest can see these pictures just a little bit more clearly than I, but Building number 7 one of the other buildings in this very large complex of buildings that is the Trade Center … there were – there were – and that is the right way to put it – there were the two towers, but then there are a number of support buildings around it – retail spaces, restaurants, office space, garages, the trains come in from New Jersey bringing commuters taking commuters back, come into the complex that is the World Trade Center, and now we are told there is a fire there and that building may collapse as well, as you can see.
We can see as we now look back down town, we can see the billowing smoke. It is extraordinary to us how long this scene has gone on. The smoke has not cleared at all. It has not lightened at all. It was that horrific moment when the Towers collapsed, and then we’ve been in this sort of situation ever since, as the fires continue to burn. Rose Arsie, one of our producers who has been slowly and diligently making her way to the building described the fires she saw in the areas of the Towers themselves and clearly those fires continue to burn at about 4:15 eastern daylight time today, in an unbelievable and awful scene in New York.”

This video excerpt was apparently extracted from a 41-minute mpeg recording discovered in a vast archive of broadcast footage publicized in late February of 2007.

Police spotted a UFO on board of helicopter

I would like to warn the readers that this story was distorted by many news/blogs into an attack on the helicopter. The original report doesn’t state any attacks. There is absolutely no reasons to believe whatever drives those saucers would hurt these policemen.

It is very annoying to see how much garbage some reporters can put, to make a sensational article.

A police helicopter crew has spotted what is described as an unusual aircraft in the Vale of Glamorgan.

The helicopter was above St Athan, which is home to an RAF base and close to Cardiff International Airport.

But three-man crew could not capture any images before the object vanished over the Bristol Channel on 8 June.

South Wales Police said the helicopter did not give chase and described the crew as very experienced. The sighting has been reported for investigation.

The helicopter was hovering in the sky at 0040 BST above the base, waiting to land.

A police spokesperson said: “The crew are very experienced and responded in a professional manner in relation to what they saw.

“In today’s skies, there are a wide variety of aircrafts which come in a range of different shapes and sizes and in all probability, this sighting has just confirmed that one of these was in the area at the relevant time,” the spokesperson added.

Napolitano Approves Prohibition on Real ID (ARIZONA)

Great news! They say no to Real ID Card!!! Awesome!

Contact: Senator Karen S. Johnson (602-926-3160)

Gov. Napolitano Approves Prohibition on Real ID

Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano signed a bill today that prohibits the
implementation of the REAL ID in Arizona. SB2677 received a Final vote of
approval in the House last week by an overwhelming margin of 51 to 1.
Napolitano’s signature was uncertain until today when she signed the bill into
law.

The bill prohibits implementation of the REAL ID Act of 2005, which
was passed by Congress as part of a supplemental spending bill for tsunami
relief and the War on Terror. The bill did not receive a hearing in either the
House or the Senate, and the public was largely unaware of it until it had
already been signed into law.

“Everyone thinks that the REAL ID is just about protecting us
against terrorism,” said co-sponsor Senator Karen Johnson (R-18). “But it
really represents a cash cow for technology companies as well as the birth of
the National ID card, complete with all the biometric information that
technology can handle – face recognition, fingerprints, etc.”

“Corporations which specialize in selling identity cards stand to
gain millions of dollars in profits if the Real ID Act is implemented,” said
Johnson, “so, of course, they’re eager for everyone to be required to carry a
National ID card everywhere they go.” Two of those corporations are Digimarc
ID Systems and L-1 – the Number 1 and Number 2 companies for the manufacture of
state driver’s licenses and identity cards. L-1 is considered the main driver
behind the REAL ID and last year had nearly $100 million in federal contracts
involving identity cards. Digimarc spent $350,000 in the first six months of
2007 lobbying Congress on the Real ID Act. Apparently the two companies are
soon to be merged, resulting in a powerhouse corporation, pushing
the “identification-as-security” concept to the maximum in order to increase
company profits as they add more and more biometric features to state driver’s
licenses.

“It’s misguided to think that identification equals security,” says
Johnson. “Identification is just identification – it doesn’t prove intent and
it doesn’t stop terrorists. Indeed, terrorists will forge documents – as they
always have – to obtain the identification they want to commit crimes. Making
U.S. citizens carry identity papers to board a plane or enter a government
building stinks,” says Johnson. “It’s odious, onerous, and a violation of our
civil liberties.”

“I refuse to be tagged and numbered,” said Johnson. “Requiring people to
carry papers takes away their freedom. There are other, better ways to stop
terrorism and to protect us against criminals. The federal government needs to
butt out and let the states handle driver licensing. It’s not the business of
the Dept. of Homeland Security to tell us how to run our state.”

Real ID – SB2677

1. Proponents always claim that the sole purpose of the Real
ID is to prevent another 9/11-type attack by disrupting terrorists travel.
That is bogus. If the government really wanted to prevent such an attack, they
would secure our borders, which would (1) cost less than implementing Real ID,
(2) would be more effective at keeping terrorists out, and (3) would be less
intrusive and less inconvenient for American citizens. Until the borders are
secure, all the rosy pleas for the Real ID are just so much hogwash.

2. The Real ID will cost the states billions of dollars. The
Dept. of Transportation estimates that in Arizona alone, it will cost $40 to
$70 million to implement just in the first year, and $15 to $20 million in
subsequent years. But they really don’t have a clue – they don’t know what the
regulations are going to be yet. They are just estimating. It will depend on
what the Rules say when they are finally issued.

They already do some things that will be part of the requirements. For
example, they already check citizenship, or whether or not someone is legally
authorized to be in the country. So that would not be an additional expense.
But even factoring in that some things required by REAL ID are already being
handled, the $40 to $70 million is over and above what we already do!!!

3. The Real ID is an invasion of privacy. Why should so much
personal information be compiled on one place for so many people to have access
to?
- medical history
- social security number
- insurance information

4. The Real ID increases the risk of Identity Theft. Identity
theft is a major problem in Arizona already. Throwing everyone’s personal
information – including social security numbers, birth dates, medical
information, driver’s license and auto licensing information, etc. – into one
massive data base just makes it easier for identity thieves to harvest
identities for fraudulent purposes. The Real ID requires all Arizona driver’s
license information to be compiled with all the information for the other 49
states and the District of Columbia into one massive database that will be
accessible by thousands of clerks and government employees throughout the
country. This is a horrendous idea – an invitation to identity theft on a
massive scale.

Mars Phoenix Tweets: "We Have ICE!"

I hope this satisfies them. Now, can we get our budget back so we can solve the issues here, before we create more issues somewhere else?

There is water ice on Mars within reach of the Mars Phoenix Lander, NASA scientists announced Thursday.

Photographic evidence settles the debate over the nature of the white material seen in photographs sent back by the craft. As seen in lower left of this image, chunks of the ice sublimed (changed directly from solid to gas) over the course of four days, after the lander’s digging exposed them.
